Sustatinability

Our commitment:

As Heckington Windmill was built to use wind power to mill flour, its an original green energy building!
Almost 200 years later, Heckington Windmill Trust are committed to protecting the environment and making the most of the amazing site and facilities, and are committed to minimising the impact of its activities on the environment wherever possible.

  • Minimise waste using by-products from the milling process for sale in the shop and use in the bakehouse
  • Solar panels are installed on the toilet block, reducing electricity consumption and feeding back into the grid
  • Maximise the use of insulation in the repair and re-purposing of mill buildings.
  • The pocketed gravel system across the site is an approved SUDS (sustainable urban drainage system) product
  • Actively promote recycling both internally and among its customers and suppliers. The waste from site is taken to a recycling facility where all plastics and recyclable items are sorted. The general waste is also sorted to maximise recyclable waste
  • Source and promote a local and/or sustainable product range in the Bake House, Tea Room and Shop.
  • Minimise the impact of the Trusts activities on wildlife with bat boxes in the toilet block
  • Promote the use of public rail transport for visitors and provide facilities for cyclists
  • Promote walking and cycling routes starting at the windmill
  • Turn off appliances overnight & use LED lighting across all areas
  • Ensure ovens, dishwashers & high energy equipment are used at full capacity each time
  • Turn down the heating in the buildings to a lower temperature when not in use
  • Ensure food waste, coffee grounds, etc from the tea rooms is taken offsite to be composted
  • Investigate the possibility of EV charging for electric vehicles on site
